60 Over Sixty in the Toronto Star
July 7, 2021
We were thrilled to see our special 60th Anniversary exhibition, 60 Over Sixty, curated by Flavio Belli, was featured in the Toronto Star yesterday!
The article covers the visionary beginnings of TOAF, and includes engaging interviews with Barbara Astman and Andrew Cheddie Sookrah, talking about their work and their connections to TOAF.
We really felt like we were part of a community… I think that’s what the fair does. It makes you feel like you’re part of a bigger picture, especially when you spend so much time working alone.
- Barbara Astman
It is pouring again here in Toronto today, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather opens up with the sun (though not too hot, please), for our participating artists who are at stackt market. If you are staying dry inside and looking for an artful break, we invite you to spend time at TOAF.ca today. Enjoy discovering works of artists from our partners at Tangled Art + Disability curated by Adam Cohoon. Tangled Art + Disability is dedicated to enhancing opportunities for artists with disabilities to contribute to the cultural fabric of our society. We are honoured to have a chance to highlight their work in our programs. Artist Xiaojing Yan has also selected a thoughtful narrative on our connection to the environment through 3D Wonders.
Make sure to sign up for tomorrow’s talk, Glimpsing the Future, Vol. 3, co-presented by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. This is a dynamic and fast-paced talk with some of Toronto's diverse, innovative and emerging artists, Mitchell F. Chan, Basil Alzeri, and Nico Taylor and Queen Kikoyi of Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM) Canada, and moderated by Joséphine Denis. Each artist will have 14-18 images and 30 seconds per image to describe their studio practice, process, and artworks. It will be a fun, informative one, so don’t miss it!
And last but certainly not least, we are super excited to discover the outstanding artists of TOAF60 according to our esteemed judges tomorrow, July 8, during our Awards Ceremony on Instagram Live at 3:30 pm.
