V Vallières is a Toronto-based multi-media artist working primarily in ceramics and textiles. They hold a BFA from Concordia University and have attended multiple residencies across Canada. Their work has been funded through various grants, including the Ontario Arts Council, and has been acquired as a part of the permanent collection at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The works represented span a period during which Vallières has experimented with the human form - moving from pieces that are recognizably figurative towards the increasingly surreal and fantastical, and not necessarily representative of a singular body. Along the way their process has naturally evolved to be more intuitive and subconscious. Their hand built coil sculptures are made in a process similar to the surrealist game exquisite corpse. Covering sections of the pieces while they build allows them to lean into automatic creation, and the unknown of ceramics. Themes explored in Vallières work include memory, reality, the subconscious, and the need for coping and defensive mechanisms. V is a ceramic technician at a community night school and an active member of community ceramics studios. They identify as non-binary, queer and neurodivergent.
