Shannon Sandwell
Shannon Sandwell is a Canadian figurative painter based in Toronto who graduated with a BFA from OCADU, where they received the Fred Hagen “passion in painting” award and the Robbie award. Their work focuses on queer/trans community and connection. They have shown locally at Xpace Cultural Centre, Bau -xi, and the Etobicoke Civic Centre, and were a member of UNTAPPED at the artist project this year. They have also had their work displayed internationally in Japan, as the featured artist for summer 2024 and winter 2025 at Hankyu Men’s Department Store. Using a collage-style of painting, Shannon’s work creates narratives that exist outside of regular time and space, emphasizing platonic intimacy and the human desire to be close with one another. Their work defamiliarizes these moments observed within their own queer and trans community, taking up space and demanding visibility, protected from the gaze.
