Sara Wiens
Sara Wiens is a contemporary painter from Vancouver, British Columbia. Her work highlights the interconnectedness of humanity to the natural world. These colourful mixed media paintings feature species or events that are situated within the larger context of ecological precarity.
At TOAF, Wiens is exhibiting her honeybee flight path paintings. Informed by academic research, these abstract artworks are based on the flight patterns of bees as they fly to and from their hives. The complexity of layered lines and colour patches in the artwork remind us that over time, the layers of different bee individuals overlap repeatedly to create an indispensable imprint on the survival of all species.
Wiens is a current MFA student in the Critical Ecological Practices cohort at Emily Carr University; she holds a BA in Studio Arts and a Bachelor of Art Education from UBC, Vancouver. She is the recipient of several grants for collaborative community art projects, is registered as a Professional Artist with the Canada Council for the Arts, and is founder of the Shuswap Artists Collective. Her work has been internationally exhibited, published and collected. She brings her years in education, community organizing, and interest in conservation to her art practice in order to move collectors and viewers to contemplation and action around climate grief.
Sara Wiens works from her studio situated on the stolen lands of the Secwe̓pemc people of the North Okanagan in Salmon Arm, BC. Currently, she is exploring the regrowth of landscape after wildfire in her MFA practice. Come visit booth 304 at the TOAF to learn more!
