Bénédicte Tétreault

City
Magog

Originally from Montreal, Bénédicte Tétreault now lives in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. After having sailed around the world with the Canadian program Class Afloat in 1994-1995, she studied Arts and Letters at the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and then moved to London (UK) to start an apprenticeship as a decorative painter. She worked there for over two years, taking part in the decoration of the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and its museum, before moving to France, where she studied decorative painting at the Institut supérieur de peinture décorative de Paris (IPEDEC). Back in Canada, she worked as a decorative and scenic painter in Montreal, Vermont and New York.

Having left the scenic and decorative world to develop a more personal approach to painting, Bénédicte still finds inspiration in the techniques, traditions and aesthetics of decorative painting, as well as in ceramics, embroidery, textile arts and etching. Spending a lot of time in the forest trails, she fills her head with thousands of images that nourrish a very personal iconography. The collection "Les sentiers" produced with acrylics on canvas presents very soft and intricate monochromatic landscapes that recall textile, lace, tapestry and wall paper. Inspired by faux marble and its successions of transparent glazes, her landscapes are created through patterns, textures, dots, hatchings and silhouettes. The entanglement guides the spectators’ gaze through the trail’s meanderings, through foliages, brambles, roots, cliffs and brooks, transporting them to a dreamy place, to explore a thousand paths, a thousand lanscapes.
