Ash Godley (b.2001) is a Toronto-based oil and acrylic painter whose practice explores the uncanny, haunted atmosphere of Canadian landscapes at night. With a focus on perspective, light, and colour, Godley transforms suburban environments and residential interiors into theatrical stages of an ambiguous drama. These familiar spaces are made eerie using the synthetic light of flashlight beams, tv screens, and camera flashes, which are translated into paint from Godley’s photography. Additionally, the use of a first-person point of view relays a connection to horror movies and video games, reminiscent of film stills or CCTV footage. This framing also turns the viewer into an active participant, investigating complicity, desire, and the politics of looking.
Godley graduated from the University of Guelph in 2024 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Art History. Since graduating, Godley has been curated in various solo and group shows in Guelph and Toronto, including at MKG127, the Plumb, and at the Art Gallery of Guelph. They were also awarded First in Show at the Artist Project fair in Toronto in 2025, and 1st place in the University of Guelph Juried Art Show in 2024.
