Carolyn Cheng is a contemporary Canadian photographer based in Toronto. She has shown at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and Ryerson University’s Paul H. Crocker Gallery. Her work has also been awarded by Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3) and the International Landscape Photographer of the Year.

“The Peak Before the Fall” captures botanical vignettes that represent a full life cycle of plants from bud to bloom to withering. The images are transformed in black and white, inverted or solarized; upending our normal sense of light and dark transporting us away from the everyday quotidien. In the safety of the studio, Cheng explores the themes of vitality, protection and fallibility; while her own views on these issues have shifted with age and through the lens of a global pandemic.
