Basalt skull

Tobias Luttmer

A skull, carved from my favourite stone. Basalt, a very hard stone that came from the Columbia river basin in Washington state. Small stone sculptures like this are an exercise for me. I take an off cut from a larger piece and carve it quickly, almost instinctual carving, trying to maintain as much gesture as I can while chasing the form. These always end up with some untouched parts, the skin of the stone or a raw fracture, lending an almost abstract feel to them.
