Sidia Atabales-Schnitzler

On her first day of preschool, Sidia Atabales-Schnitzler made a dramatic scene. She didn’t want her mother to leave. Teachers comforted her by allowing her to paint. That began her artistic career. Now, as an adult and emerging artist in Toronto, Ontario, not much has changed.

In her current work, she explores how the relationship between the artist and sitter can affect the final image. She works from old photos – some of strangers and some of people whom are intimately familiar. Exploring themes of intimacy, distance, and the subconscious. Sidia is also interested in the sustainability of old photographic methods, such as cyanotypes. The more everybody pushes towards the next new thing, the more she feels inclined to pull back.

✺ On July 3rd at 12:30pm EST, Sidia will be chatting with Kyungmin Kate Lee on Instagram live. They will be talking about their processes, inspirations, and works. Check it out at @torontooutdoorart! ✺
