Parveen Dhatt

Based on Phulkari, a style of embroidery which was popular as functional art in Punjab, India and literally translates as ‘floral embroidery’. Not only did the Phulkari depict village life, it also carried messages of wisdom from the elders for a happily married life. This work is my interpretation, shifted through a western lens of the art of Phulkari. I carved out an image onto wet oil paint with a very rudimentary instrument, a utility knife.
