Laurie Skantzos

Laurie was born in Toronto and studied fine art at the University of Waterloo. She has been an active member of the art community for over twenty years, regularly participating in shows such as the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair and International Affordable Art Fairs in London, Hong Kong, Seoul and New York. Her work is included in private and public collections across North America, Europe and Asia. She works from her studio in Guelph Ontario.
Laurie's practice is experimental and rigorous. She works with oil paint, cold wax, acrylics and sculpted laminated plywood forms. The sides of the pieces are painted with fluorescent colour, which, when hung against a wall creates an animated, halo-like aura around the work. Shapes are layered and over painted, and she often employs rough, hand cut templates and masks as a strategy to minimize any associations with the traditional painting gesture.Working wet in wet, unexpected transfers of shape and colour inevitably occur, which add complexity.
