Jacquie Green

Toronto
My figurative paintings are founded in observation and drawing. I study the world around me, trying to overturn my assumptions and challenge my perspectives.
I start with an image that has some undefinable quality of stickiness. I play with composition and scale. Then I collage on panel creating a chaotic, energetic surface. On that I draw in pen and ink with interrupted, erratic marks. I like that strength and energy in the finished work. The last step is to unify all with layers of encaustic, playing with levels of transparency.
This year I have been captivated by street photographers. I miss street life, random interactions, urban surprises. I abstract from old photographs, recombine them to make new compositions that speak to the world we temporarily lost. I can't wait to get lost in the crowd again.
