Fake Sleep

Graham Krenz

You close your eyes and pretend you’re asleep, while the car drives through slushy intersections with Christmas lights on every side. You’re not tired, but you listen to your parents talk as if you’re not there, and for the first time realize you’re joining a movie in middle. You pretend to be asleep and you pretend you don’t exist so they can exist for a bit just as themselves. You wake up at home in bed.
