Cayuga
I have been an artist in the Haldimand area for some time but only recently discovered ceramic art and its functional daily interaction in our lives. I was immediately hooked! Since then, the ability to touch or, better yet, to give purpose to a piece of art has become essential to my work. I completed my ceramic studies at Sheridan College in April 2019. I work exclusively with casting slip and hand-made plaster moulds. While perfect for my design process, replicating forms using moulds might appear coldly industrialized. To offset this, my surface treatment incorporates random variations, re-individualizing each piece. The glaze crystals suggest movement and depth, hinting at nature’s geological formations. Unglazed surfaces invite the hand, providing a soft tactility. Rather than admired from a distance, my work is meant to be used routinely, the crystals pondered, the finely sanded unglazed surfaces enjoyed through touch and further polished from years of use.
