Joanna Strong’s paintings explore the material world to express our experiences, addressing the relationship between form and meaning. Her well-known Entanglement series uses rubber bands as a source material to create detailed paintings of mysterious worlds, embodiments of resilience, tension and complexity. A process of recycling ephemera from daily life leads to the creation and portrayal of unique spheres, each representative of a specific meaning. Landscape elements such as sky, snow, water, and roads are suggested, and abstract ideas of entangled thoughts are given form.
Originally from Newfoundland and now based in Toronto, Strong holds a BFA from NSCAD in Halifax and an MFA from the University of Waterloo. Her work has appeared in many solo and group exhibitions, and is in collections across Canada, the US, Britain, France, Germany, and Dubai. She is a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award and two Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council grants.
