MISSISSAUGA
Jasaña Alleyne is an emerging, multidisciplinary artist based in Mississauga, Ontario. During her time as an undergraduate student, Jasaña was increasingly concerned with the negative representation of Black people in the art courses that were offered and was frustrated that there were no Black art courses provided to counter the negative associations. The "Lack of Black," as Jasaña calls it, became too loud to ignore. In her work, Jasaña explores the gaps in the art world, institutions, and art history, such as the exclusion of people of colour and the dearth of female artists and connects them to current social, racial, and political issues. Specializing in painting, Jasaña analyzes familiar subjects and themes from art history and reimagines them through a contemporary and inclusive lens.
