Heather J. A. Thomson’s practice amalgamates her passion for history and a desire to use a visual language. Her pieces are a culmination of research and visual study and adhere to a central question or concept. Heather received a BA from the University of Guelph in 2017 and awarded the 2017-2018 Don Phillips Scholarship at Open Studio, Toronto.

Heather feels discussions of hyperinflation Germany focus on statistics and disregard the physicality of currency. The Papiermark was used by people during the post WWI inflation, and she believes the banknotes are objects with stories to tell. Through interacting with her pieces, Heather invites viewers to observe minute details and hopes Papiermarks can move beyond their statistical value.
