David Brandy is a fine art photographer who captures transient moments that reflect the concept of “The Uncanny” – the psychological experience of something as strangely familiar. His photographs of familiar objects or places evoke a sense of being both beautiful and strange, reflecting a splendour we seldom notice. For TOAF 2020, he describes his series, ‘Empty Seats’ as, “Familiar images that reveal the strangeness in the ordinary, creating a canvas that emphasizes a strong sense of isolation.” Brandy began his creative career with a BA in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson University. His practice has evolved into an award-winning photographic storyteller. He received an Emerging Artists by Emerging Curator Award at the 2019 Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. He won the Juror's Choice Award at RMG Exposed 2019. His work sold at the SNAP 2019 Auction for over the asking price. He was a finalist in both the Quest Art 2018 National Art Prize, and the 2017 Salt Spring National Art Prize.
